Boat races return to lake

Nothing makes the edge of summer more apparent to me than when I start hearing boats roaring on the lake. The boats in the race this weekend are jet boats, so they go FAST! I am more of a relaxing ride on a pontoon boat kind of gal, but these high powered jet boats certainly are fun to watch!

--------------------------------------
LAKE ELSINORE ---- High-speed boat racing will return to the lake Saturday and Sunday, officials announced.

The National Jet Boat Association bills the event as "Thunder in the Channel II," building on the success of the professional drag boat races held in March at the inlet channel to Lake Elsinore.

The gates at 500 Diamond Drive open at 7 a.m. both days, with racing beginning at 7:30 a.m., according to a release from the association.

The event also features vendors selling food and refreshments, including beer and wine. The band "Wicked World" is scheduled to perform from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, the release stated.

Admission is $15 Saturday and $20 Sunday, or $30 for both days, officials said.

Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs, but pets, ice chests, food and beverages are not allowed inside the gates, officials said.

More information is available by calling 714-777-5081.

People you see everyday - Part 2

Continuation of the "People you see everyday" series...

The Cowboy:
I have seen The Cowboy walking on Grand ave and Riverside drive now for oh... at least 10 years. He is noticeable by the fact that he ALWAYS wears a cowboy hat, usually wears shorts, and all winter long wears a large down pillowed vest.

He is always walking straight and tall, and for some reason strikes me as being a very happy person. Even though he is an older gentleman, his posture is so good that I can't imagine he was anything other than a soldier of some sort in his younger days.

I wonder what his story is? Does he wear that hat because he is trying to simply keep the sun off of his face? Or did someone important to him give him that hat and it is now as much a part of him as his right arm? Does he walk because he cannot afford a car? Or does he walk because he likes the wind in his face and the things he can see at the slower pace? Has he lived here in Lake Elsinore all of his life? Or did he travel the world? Did he dream away his youth here hoping to get out, only to get out and dream away his adulthood hoping to come home?

Or maybe he was a real cowboy in Texas or Wyoming and only ended up in Lake Elsinore because this was where the wind and his horse led him? Not possible you say? Well, stranger things have happened. Especially here in Lake Elsinore.....

Speaking of the Animal Shelter...

I know times are tough and so many people need help... But if you have a little extra I urge you to donate to Animal Friends of the Valley. They are a wonderful organization and bring people and animals together every day, which improves the life of both. Thank you. :)

-----------------------------------
From the AFV Website:

WE DESPERATELY NEED:

Kitty Litter
Kong Chew Toys for Dogs
Carpet for the Dogs

The economy is severely affecting donations of basic items for the animals. We had been relying heavily on corporate donations of food and litter, but they are fast drying up.

If you can help, please bring donations to the shelter or call us at 951-674-0618 to arrange for pick up.

All the animals thank you!

Animal shelter work to resume

Construction on the new animal shelter on Corydon and Mission Trail is finally going to resume this week. This is wonderful news, however, there appears to be a question now on whether or not Animal Friends of the Valley is going to be the one operating it once it's completed.

Apparently the Southwest Communities Financing Authority Board has decided they want to put it up for bid. Which basically means they want Riverside County Animal Control to run the shelter and not AFV.

AFV has taken care of the animals in this valley for 20 years and has done a FAR better job than the county animal services. In fact, it wasn't that long ago that the county shelter got in all sorts of hot water because they weren't feeding and watering the homeless pets properly if at all. It was disgusting and unforgivable how those poor animals were treated. Yet, at AFV (formerly known as LEAF) the care was outstanding... Even with much less funding than the county received.

I do NOT want the government taking over this shelter. The people at AFV have spent years raising money for this shelter and they deserve to continue their work at helping the animals here. We don't need just another government run animal shelter where money comes before animal welfare. What we need is AFV and it many volunteers who care enough about the animals to work many hard hours for no pay.

Something is very fishy about this whole thing. Why on earth would the county want to take the shelter away from AFV??? Is there some sort of conspiracy going on? Is this whole fiasco some attempt at revenge from the water district? Is there someone who is going to benefit financially from this new "deal"? Or is it simply a case of AFV not realizing that "no good deed goes unpunished"? Hopefully time will tell...

Adam was robbed!

I have NEVER watched an entire season of American Idol until this season and it was all because of Adam Lambert. 2009 has been a difficult year and waaay too much reality all around.

For some reason Adam Lambert dragged me back to the 80's every time he was on stage. The fabulous 80's... when I was a teenager, all was right in my little world, and I listened to the Clash, Bowie, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, Icicle Works, Dramarama, Bau Haus, Kajagoogoo, and on and on....

I'm sure Kris Allen is a nice guy and can sing ok, but he makes me feel too much in the present... And when I'm watching friends and family struggling so much in this economy I just don't want to watch a guy that drags me back here kicking and screaming. I want to go back sometimes... Even for just an hour.

Thank you Adam for bringing me back to an easier time every week and making me smile even when there were few reasons to.

To quote Cinderella... "We all need a little shelter".

Thank you Adam and you deserved to win buddy!!!

ADAM FTW!!!!

Guadalajara is open again!

Guadalajara Restaurant on Main st. in Lake Elsinore is by FAR my favorite place to eat. Everything on the menu is delicious and in very large portions, and at very reasonable prices. The ambiance is relaxing and the service has never been anything but top notch.

And I can't find the words to describe how amazingly perfect their salsa is! The salsa at Guadalajara is one of the items I have on my "food I would take to a desert island to live on" list, and must be experienced at least once in life. I have eaten a lot of salsa over the years, and Guadalajara's salsa is by far the best.

I'm so happy they have reopened!

--------------
"LAKE ELSINORE ---- The tortillas are steaming, the asada is sizzling and the margaritas are flowing again at Guadalajara 2 1/2 months after the popular downtown restaurant and landmark shut down because of a fire.

To celebrate the reopening, which occurred without fanfare earlier this month, the Lake Elsinore Valley Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribboncutting at noon Wednesday at the restaurant at 105 N. Main St., a spokeswoman for the restaurant said.

The restaurant closed March 2 after a fire broke out early that morning. Firefighters arrived and contained the blaze to the kitchen. The cause of the fire was electrical, fire officials have said.

While owner Ricardo Solano had estimated the restaurant would be closed about a week, the work took much longer.

Guadalajara has been a fixture at North Main and Graham streets for 22 years, Rosie O'Connor said. A sister restaurant run by the family ---- Guadalajara Grill ---- operates on Jefferson Avenue in Temecula."

People you see every day - Part 1

There are people that I have been seeing here in Lake Elsinore for years that I feel I know, even though I have never spoken to them. Over the years I have given them names and assigned personalities, and histories. Now, however, I am thinking maybe I should stop and talk to a few of them one of these days. Funny how people can be a part of our lives, yet not a part at the same time... I am going to be doing a series on these people and I urge you to do the same with the people in your life that you don't really know.

The first in my "People you see every day" series:

The Man in Black:
I have seen this man walking on Grand Ave for at least the past 10 years. He is now in his 50's (looks like, but who knows?) with graying hair and beard, and somewhat resembles the actor Sam Elliot. He is ALWAYS wearing all black. Black jeans, black t-shirt, black boots, and in the cooler weather a black jacket. Hence the name "Man in Black".

I have imagined that once upon a time he was working as a stock broker in some tall building in some crowded city. Until one day he decided that he simply didn't want to do that anymore. So he sold everything he had and wandered westward until he happened to end up in Lake Elsinore.

He now lives a simple life in a cottage by the water and walks where he needs to go so he can smell the earth, feel the breeze, and embrace as much freedom as one can in this life. And in between his walks around the lake he fights for truth, justice and the American way.

Or maybe he is just a big Johnny Cash fan?

Lake Elsinore Car Show

Average guy's car show comes to Lake Elsinore

"Look for tiki carvers, pinstripe artists and a '50s-style pinup-girl contest -- the requirement is retro-classy-glamorous -- at the show on Main Street downtown.

Expect also to see dozens of American-made cars and trucks built in 1965 or earlier and American or British motorcycles made in 1969 or earlier, organizers said. No high-priced street rods or foreign or "art" cars will be allowed. All entrants must be driven, not brought in on a trailer like a queen, to the show.

The show is being put together by Desiree Eisenbarth of The Velvet Vault, an alternative clothing store on Main, and will feature "ol' school" hot rods and customs like those built in the late 1940s to the early 1960s. It is geared more toward the average guy who can work on his car but is doing it on a budget -- not the hot rodder whose car may have cost tens of thousands of dollars to buy, she said."

Ace of Cakes

I am completely addicted to the tv show Ace of Cakes!

My family and I even took up cake making and playing with fondant. We are no where near as good as the Charm City Cakes people, but spending half a day working together as a family, making a fancy cake, is about as good as life gets.

We've made a jack o lantern, a pretty good replica of my daughters cat Tiki, and a Kentucky Derby hat cake (with all sorts of stuff on it, just like the real thing). This weekend we are going to tackle making a Noah's Ark cake. I'll post some pics of it when we're done.

Oh, and if you've never heard of Charm City Cakes, make sure to check them out on the Food Network. Their show is called "Ace of Cakes" and the artists working there are incredibly talented. And funny too!

The Machados

In 1858 Agustin Machado became the owner of the land now knows as Lake Elsinore. He built an adobe house (that still stands to this day) on the southwest shore of the lake, where he raised his family of 12 children and tended to his cattle.

During the time when the Machado family owned the land their home became an official stop of the Butterfield Stagecoach. Mail and passengers would stop at the home for food and rest until the coaches were halted due to the Civil War. During the war there were no official stagecoaches running through the area, however, private coaches, war suppliers, immigrants, and many other people used the stage route and stayed at the Machado residence.

Rancho La Laguna continued on in this vein, with the large Machado family tending to their herd of cattle and caring for travellers for many years. However, by 1873 most of the land had been sold to developers and the Machado family only retained about 500 acres.

---------

The Machado adobe is not occupied at the moment, and hasn't been for many years. Yet, it is still standing strong and even the entry posts are still there. The house can be seen from Grand Ave at the southwest corner of the lake between Riverside drive and the entrance to the Ortega hwy.

It is a beautiful old building and I really hope that at some point it gets restored and cared for properly. If I ever win the lottery (guess I should start playing?) I would love to spend the remainder of my days bringing back some of the old glory, beauty, and charm that can be found in the still standing history of Lake Elsinore.

(I will be driving around town this weekend taking pictures of the Machado house and many other places as well. If I can find my camera... Wish me luck!)

Location of the Machado Adobe. (It is the reddish building in the field, just to the right of the mobile home park.)

The Water People

In the late 1700's the land that is now Lake Elsinore was inhabited by the "Pai-ah-che" Native Americans, who called the lake "Etengvo Wumoma" meaning "Hot Springs by the Little Sea".

The Pai-ah-che people believed that the lake and surrounding area was very sacred. Their Holy Man, Wiyot, shared his wisdom on the shore of the lake for a period of time until he ascended into the sky and became the moon (Moyla).

Another fascinating part of their heritage, is that they also worshipped One God, called Changichnish. They also have the story of the Great Flood and the repopulation of the earth afterwards. (Luiseno Indians - University of California)
-------------

I find it absolutely astonishing how similar the stories of the flood described in the Bible and the flood described half a world away by the Luiseno tribes are. We really are so connected to each other, we human beings... We tend to often only see our differences, but we are so alike and so interconnected in our stories, our needs, our wants, our hopes, our dreams and our histories. Makes me smile. :)

Haunted Elsinore

Just in case you are into this sort of thing...

Spooky places in Lake Elsinore!

This is from the list of haunted places at Shadowlands.

1. The old Country Club (Now burned down)

My family and I explored this building several times when it was still standing. It was still beautiful even though abandoned for many years. The main hall that over looked the lake remained cool even in the hot summer, and the views were spectacular!

Unfortunately the whole place went up in flames a few years back and now all that is left are a few brick walls, the gazebo, and supposedly quite a few restless spirits.

It is located right off of Lakeshore drive in Lake Elsinore and is definitely worth a visit.

2. The Chimes

I have been to the Chimes many times over the years, and I really do think it might be genuinely haunted! It is nowhere near as creepy looking as it was before the remodel, but it still has that "being watched" feeling to it. Especially the back area. Oh, and the current owners are absolutely delightful!

3. Hotel on Main St.

Very interesting building! Apparently many people have heard screaming coming from the building at around 1am on saturday nights. Personally I have never heard these screams, and for that I am very thankful!

The minutes for the Elsinore Board of Trustees 1888

This is amazing! These minutes from a meeting here in Elsinore of the Board of Trustee's were recently discovered. They are handwritten and from 1888!

At this very first meeting of the newly citified Lake Elsinore (121 years ago!) some of the important things discussed were:

1. Outlawing slingshots -I can just imagine the youth at the time pelting pebbles at passersby. No idea why that makes me chuckle a bit :)

2. No vulgar language "Certain public disturbances will be punishable as misdemeanors with a fine of up to $200, including "vulgar or indecent language in the presence or hearing of wimin or children." - Wimin! I really didn't think that phrase was ever used in real life... But I guess it was here in Elsinore! Go figure!

3. Speeding - Going over 7mph in Elsinore was now officially a crime. How does one know how fast they are going on a horse?

Introduction

I moved to Lake Elsinore in 1992 when my first child was only a few months old. I was in my early 20's and we originally moved here solely for the reason that we were able to find a two bedroom apartment on Joy st (more about that street later) for $400.

But before long I fell in love with this place. Head over heels kind of love... I fell in love with the people, the buildings, the lake, the mountains, the roads, the fields, and the unique character that syrups over all of it. There are both good, bad, beautiful and ugly things to be found here, but if you open your heart a little all of it is definitely interesting.

I had felt a connection with Lake Elsinore since the day we first moved here, but then in the mid 1990's I was fortunate to be chosen to write for the local newspaper, the now defunct "Lake Elsinore Sun Tribune". I wrote a monthly column about Lake Elsinore and on that road I was able to meet many amazing people who made this their home. That was one of the best times of my life and I will be forever grateful to the wonderful people at the paper who gave me the opportunity to not only write, but to really explore this little city.

I learned very quickly that every place and every person has a story that is worth listening to, and that appearances truly can be deceiving. I have spent the last few years raising my children and cleaning up cat and dog hair (and an occasional feather), but writing about Lake Elsinore again was always something I longed to do. So here I am again, hoping to show everyone who cares to listen that the mystery and magic of Lake Elsinore is worth exploring.

Plenty of people love to complain about Lake Elsinore, and have given it some not so nice (but albeit clever) names. I, however, are not one of them. I have been to every state in the United States, and have wandered lazily through several other countries, but there is something about the very land itself here that is special. It pulls you in and surrounds you with its breath of wildflowers, its vision of a real living body of water, its sounds of planes, boats, motorcycles, children, music, birds, and a lapping of the water at the webbed feet of a flock of pelicans that never cease to return every year.

Even though I have watched the population grow through the years and much building in once vacant spaces, this is still a wild place. No matter what they build or tear down, I have a feeling it will always have a wildness about it. A wildness that will weave itself into your life and your soul and make you feel part of something beautiful.

Many people drive through here every day on their way to somewhere else. When I see their stressed faces through the glass of their windshields, as they finally reach Grand ave from the Ortega, I wish I could tell them to stop and stay for awhile. I think to myself...

"Get out of your car and go down to the lake! Roll up your pants that you bought at some closed in mall, take off your Italian loafers, and go down to the water. Pretend you are seven years old again and wade out into the coolness and look across the ripples. Let the breeze blow away your fears of that bill you know is in your mailbox, let the birds delight your eyes and make you forget your taxes, and peer into the hills beyond and see the past.

The history of this city, with its 121 years of ups and downs and twirls, and events and people and buildings, some still standing and some long gone. And as you stand in the cool water with the sand between your toes, remember your own history. Remember when you were a child without a care in the world and you could swim and run all day in the sun. Go there for just a little while today and remember what it was like to find immense joy and gentle peace without gadgets, or video games, or the internet, or whatever it is you fill your moments with to distraction.

Remember that book, 'Where the Wild Things Are'? Well, that is where you are at my friend. Let the wind blow sand into your hair, feed the goofy ducks that complain nearby, jump into the water and float on your back, then close your eyes and just feel. I know you are busy, but once in awhile it is ok to stop... It is ok to stop and forget about your worries and disappear into the misty realms of yesterday. And what better place to do that than standing on the shore of the only natural lake in Southern California where the real things of this world, such as birds, water, fish, sand, wind, hills, grass, and flowers, can overcome the false reality of bills, commutes, taxes, unemployment, 401ks, and the red circle of death on your Xbox?"

Thank you all for reading, and I hope to update this blog daily. Not only to share my adoration of this place with anyone who cares to read it, but also to remind myself that death and taxes are not the only sure things in this life. There is another. And that is that beauty and even adventure can be found in almost anything. It is up to our own heart to see beyond our eyes and fears, and go past those false veils to where the wild things are...

Where in the world is Lake Elsinore?
